A “good” credit score depends on what you’re applying for. A score that gets you a credit card may not get you the best mortgage rate. Here’s how the ranges work and what score you should aim for.
FICO score ranges
Most lenders use FICO scores, which run from 300 to 850:
- 800–850: Exceptional
- 740–799: Very good
- 670–739: Good
- 580–669: Fair
- 300–579: Poor
The average FICO score in the U.S. is about 714, according to FICO’s Fall 2026 Credit Insights report. So “good” (670+) puts you in line with most Americans.
VantageScore ranges
Free apps like Credit Karma show VantageScore 3.0, which also runs 300–850 but uses different labels: excellent (781–850), good (661–780), fair (601–660), poor (500–600) and very poor (300–499). Because the models differ, your VantageScore and FICO score won’t match. See why there are different credit scores.
What’s “good” for each kind of credit
- Mortgage: FHA loans allow 3.5% down with a 580+ score. Conventional loans have traditionally needed about 620. The best pricing usually starts around 740, and it keeps improving up to about 780. See what home buyers need to know.
- Auto loans: Lenders often use FICO Auto Scores. The best rates generally go to scores in the 700s and up.
- Credit cards: Most rewards cards look for good-to-excellent credit (670+). Secured cards are available for thin or damaged credit.
- Insurance: In most states, insurers use credit-based insurance scores to help set premiums, so better credit can mean lower rates.
How to raise your score
- Pay on time. Payment history is the largest part of your FICO score.
- Keep card balances low. Under 30% of your limit helps, and under 10% is better.
- Fix errors. Check your free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Dovly can automate TransUnion disputes.
- Build history if you’re new. Self reports monthly payments to all three bureaus.
- Watch for changes. SmartCredit alerts you when your reports change.
