“Best credit repair company” lists change every year, and many are paid rankings. The better question is which kind of help fits your situation. Here are your real options, from free to paid.
Option 1: Repair your credit yourself (free)
Anything a credit repair company does with disputes, you can do yourself at no cost. Pull your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, dispute errors with each bureau, and follow up. Our 4-step guide shows you how.
Best for: a handful of clear errors and people willing to spend a few hours on paperwork.
Option 2: Nonprofit credit counseling
If the real problem is debt rather than errors, a nonprofit credit counselor can review your budget and may set up a debt management plan with lower interest rates. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling lists member agencies.
Best for: high card balances, collections, and trouble keeping up with payments.
Option 3: A credit repair company
A company can save you time by managing disputes and follow-ups. Before you sign, know your rights under the Credit Repair Organizations Act:
- They can’t charge you until the services are performed
- They must give you a written contract and a three-day right to cancel
- They can’t promise to remove accurate negative information — no one can
Red flags: upfront fees, guarantees of a specific score, or advice to create a “new” credit identity.
Best for: many errors across several bureaus and little time to manage them. For disputes a bureau won’t fix, see when to use a credit repair attorney.
Tools that help with any option
- Monitoring: SmartCredit tracks all three bureaus and shows which actions may move your score; Credit Karma is free.
- Automated disputes: Dovly monitors your credit and can file TransUnion disputes for you, with free and paid plans (see our Dovly review).
- Building history: Self and the Credit Builder Card add on-time payments to your reports.
